Vigenere Cipher

Hash & Encryption

Secure your text using a keyword-based polyalphabetic substitution.

About This Tool

An advanced cipher that uses a keyword to shift letters. Unlike Caesar, it uses different shifts for different letters, making it much harder to crack.

Frequently Asked Questions

The Caesar cipher uses a single shift for the entire message. The Vigenere cipher uses a keyword, applying a different Caesar shift to each letter based on the keyword characters.

You repeat the keyword above your message. For each letter, you find the shift value of the keyword letter and move the message letter forward by that amount.

It was once called "le chiffre indéchiffrable" (the unbreakable cipher), but it can be cracked using the Kasiski examination or frequency analysis of recurring patterns.
